Naturally, he has been challenged by different politicians at local and national level on the veracity of his quoted statement. However, seeing as the decision is in the hands of Department of the Environment and Dublin City Managers it is to be expected that the project will go ahead (in some form) and that most of the relevant politicians will be satisfied to score points off each other safely in the knowledge that none of them will actually need to shoulder any real responsibility. Should the Poolbeg Incinerator project be abandoned the ensuing race for credit and acknowledgment could be cynically observed as amusing, if not a little dispiriting. July 20, 2005Leinster RedevelopmentPosted 1875 days ago by Michael Turley on July 20, 2005 It has been reported in the Irish Times that a decision is due on the proposed redevelopment of the Leinster Rugby ground in Donnybrook (shared by Old Wesley and Bective Rangers RFC as well as a tennis club). The main objections raised by residents are reported to be related to the planned development of 76 apartments with the attendant issues of traffic congestion, etc. (although I met one neighbour who wants the whole ground moved to Blanchardstown, of all places).I hope the redevelopment does go ahead. The ground is terribly outdated and is actually an eyesore. Dublin needs more sporting facilities and decent grounds. However, building and maintaining top class facilities is an expensive business and, given prevailing economic realities, it looks like the apartments are a necessary component to the financial aspect of the redevelopment project. PS Congratulations to my old buddy and Leinster stalwart Malcolm O’Kelly and his wife Stephanie who were married on Monday. Although, there were a few gasps and mutterings when the Gospel Choir gave a fairly storming rendition of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" during the ceremony - mustn’t have been rugby fans! I am delighted that Lansdowne Road got the nod ahead of Abbotstown which, in spite of the greater development opportunity, seemed the lesser option for the sports fan. See here for the government press release.29/01/2004: There was a well attended meeting at Lansdowne Tennis club yesterday evening. A good percentage of the attendees were political representatives which meant, of course, that there were plenty of long winded and irrelevant questions but the meeting still managed to be largely positive. Although concerns were forthrightly expressed there were no outright objections to the proposal. |
