Irish Election Blog Conference

Posted 1455 days ago by Michael Turley on September 13, 2006 October 7th will see a conference on, of all things, blogging the next Irish General Election. It will be held in the Digital Hub on Crane Street. The event seems to be at a provisional planning stage and the organisers are looking for sponsorship and guests. Hope it all goes well.

More information at the Irish Election website.

TCD Long Room Fund Raising

Posted 1462 days ago by Michael Turley on September 6, 2006 I noticed this at Independent Senator Norris' website. Trinity College, Dublin are currently undergoing a project which aims to clean the collection stored in the Long Room (which apart from many other distinctions is claimed to have been used as the basis for some impressive Star Wars scenery). The projected cost is €2 million. I visited the Long Room during the summer for the Beckett exhibition and I would urge everyone to visit this very important and beautiful library.

More information can be found at Trinitys Alumni website and a donation form can be downloaded from here.

Voter Registration

Posted 1468 days ago by Michael Turley on August 31, 2006 Most people in Dublin South East should have received a voter registration form by post but, in case you haven't, you can download the relevant forms from the Dublin City Council website at Dublin City Councils website.

Click here to download a voter registration form as Gaelige and here for the English version.

See the government OASIS website for more information.

Political Blogging

Posted 1631 days ago by Michael Turley on March 21, 2006 Piaras Kelly recently posted a piece about political blogging. He had asked a few questions about my political blogging experience and he was kind enough to quote some of my answers.

Politics Test

Posted 1664 days ago by Michael Turley on February 16, 2006 Noticed a number of other political website owners had themselves evaluated using this test. Its a little US-centric (taking the centre ground seems to get you labelled as left wing) but fun nonetheless. Give it a blast here.

Social Liberal (68% permissive)
Economic Liberal (31% permissive)

London Bombing Media Coverage

Posted 1882 days ago by Michael Turley on July 13, 2005 There has been a huge amount of analysis and opinion about the recent bombings in London. Ranging from predictable and unsophisticated anti-Muslim comment (http://atangledweb.typepad.com/weblog/2005/07/a_bit_of_plain_.html) to drawing the somewhat sentimental comparison of the "Blitz" spirit to identifying the intervention in Iraq as a main, if not sole cause, of the atrocities - a lot of it has been uninformative. So it is nice to see that Richard Delevan has some thought-provoking commentary on his site.

Having had a certain amount of time to digest the recent coverage, my own view is that the Iraq war has acted as a galvanizing influence for would be terrrorists, however, it would seem that the people perpetrating this type of crime are working as part of a wider anti-Western agenda. The Iraq war may act as a rallying call for disaffected radical Muslims but the jihad cause existed prior to the Iraq invasion and adherents were active in America as early as 1993 (when a bomb was set in the World Trade Centre).

The perplexing issue now is, how a number of British citizens became so disaffected with their environment that they felt that killing themselves and murdering as many innocent people as they could was a worthy action. Could it be as simple as racial and religious alienation being coursed through the channels of radical Islam?

EU Software Patents

Posted 1904 days ago by Michael Turley on June 21, 2005 It is being reported that the scales are tipping in favour of large multinationals in the EU patents row (see http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/05/06/20/2210216.shtml?tid=155&tid=185&tid=17).

Depending on your perspective, U.S. style patent procedure may or may not stimulate innovation and accompanying business growth. I tend towards the idea that patents should only be granted to very specific technical innovations, which is perhaps inspired by my own use of free and open source software (this site is run on bblog written in php hosted on Linux). I also wonder would the benefits of an alternative patent system to the U.S. model stimulate more knowledge based innovation in Europe (although it is significant that it is reported that European technology companies (Nokia, Siemens, Philips) are amongst those pushing for tighter patent legislation).

I am glad to see that Fianna Fáils Brian Crowley has been supportive of the efforts to restrict the adoption of over generous software patent legislation. However, although the software patent issue has potentially very serious future implications, it is a complex, turgid issue and is certainly of specialist interest. The enthusiastic idealists and smaller business interests have their work cut out for them. See http://economic-majority.com/help.en.php if you are interested in helping the fight against EU Software Patents.

Update: The European Parliament voted 648 to 14 to reject the Computer Implemented Inventions Directive. Well done to all campaigners involved.

Bloomsday Festivities

Posted 1909 days ago by Michael Turley on June 16, 2005 In case you didn't already know, today is Bloomsday. Amid the festivities Senator Norris has been warning that the Bloomsday commemoration is in danger of vanishing as the organization is largely sustained by Joyce enthusiasts. It's a worthwhile commemoration and should probably be properly funded but considering the unfortunate shambles that is the St. Patricks day celebration (or our cringeworthy millennium celebrations) you would wonder what kind of event it would turn into should the attendant "professionals" be brought in with a funding intitiative.

PS, if you are interested in the briefly mentioned but absorbing "stately, plump Buck Mulligan" Ullysses character then you might read Ulick O'Connors biography of Oliver St. John Gogarty (one of two gentlemen associated with Trinity which have the great honour of having a Dublin pub named after them (the other being celebrated scholar Mahaffy who, I think, may have taught Gogarty)).

Live 8 and Monster Meetings

Posted 1917 days ago by Michael Turley on June 8, 2005 Just reading that Bob Geldolf is having doubts about the Live 8 extravaganza planned for early July. With an increasing amount of perhaps optimistic activities being announced I'm not surprised. I wonder will he become a modern day Daniel O'Connell and scale back this 21st century monster meeting? Probably not. The Live 8 project seems to be generating a momentum of its own and contentious analysis is steamrolled with the rally cry of eliminating third world debt.

I wonder how far this initiative will go towards achieving its stated aim?

For a really dissenting view you might read David Vance from A Tangled Web where he states his typically uncompromising position.

Thanks

Posted 2260 days ago by Michael Turley on June 30, 2004 Thanks to friends and family who supported me during what turned out to be a hard fought but ultimately unsuccessful campaign. I am looking forward to the General Elections where we can apply some of the difficult lessons learnt this time out.
